CHINESE TO ENGLISH
         一个人的生命究竟有多大意义,这有什么标准可以衡量吗?提出一个绝对的标准当然很困难;但是,大体上看一个人对待生命的态度是否严肃认真,看他对待劳动、工作等等的态度如何，也就不难对这个人的存在意义做出适合的估计了。
        古来一切有成就的人，都很严肃地对待自己的生命，当他活着一天，总要尽量多劳动、多工作、多学习，不肯虚度年华，不让时间白白浪费掉。我国历代的劳动人民及大政治家、大思想家等等都莫不如此。

【译文】 (提示：本文节选自文章《生命的三分之一》)
①What is it that is the significance of life? Is there any gauge available to measure it? ②It is true that it would be very difficult to try to suggest/advance a ready, absolute standard, but the significance of one's life would be more ore less reasonably evaluated by judging in general how serious he is about existence, and what general attitude he takes toward life and work.
③Since time immemorial, accomplished men all treated their lives very seriously. ④As long as they lived, they kept on laboring, working, and studying as hard as possible, unwilling to spend time in vain, let alone waste even a single moment of their lives. ⑤This is true of the working people of all ages as well as of the great statesmen and great thinkers throughout the history.

这篇中译英的文章其实不难，意思容易理解 ，但作为考试，翻译要到位，对于我这个刚开始复习的人来说，还是有许多的不足。自己的译文感觉不是很到位。下面来逐句探讨：
①我翻成：How much does one's life mean? Can it be measured by any criteria? 明显是对着中文的意思在翻译，不地道。这里“究竟”要译成强调句式：it is...that... (陈述句)It is what that is the significance of life. 生命的重要到底是什么？即：生命到底重要在哪里。[gauge: an instrument for measuring the amount or level of sth.] 译文强调“有”，而不是“能”，所以我不到位。加上了available显地地道。
②当然...但是 要用句型：it's true..., but... 好地道^o^ ；存在的意义即生命意义，“存在、生命、生活”宜交叉译做life和existence;“提出”我认为还可以用propose，ready在这里不明白，我想可以加也可以不加吧。more or less=或多或少；适合的=reasonable（恰当的，有理的） 大体上=in general；两处“对待”做了不同处理，避免了重复。一个用be about，一个用attitude toward。
③古来可以翻成：from time immemorial,/of all ages/throughout the history； 这里对待又翻成了treat. 应该也可以用take吧。take sth. seriously.
④当他活着一天：as long as he lived/each (more) day he lived. 我觉得可以说：if only he is alive. unwilling to的连接做地很好，我是想不到的。要记住啊！虚度年华=spend one's life in vain/ idle away one's time; let alone=更别说，更不用说
⑤历代=throughout all dynasties/history. 莫不如此=without exception/it's true of all...“及”这里不用and而是更高级的词汇as well as!可以使用词提升档次哦。奇怪的是为什么译文没有体现“我国”呢？应该是the history of our nation 吧。
