What is Global Warming ?

  What is Global Warming?

Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, cloud forests are drying, and wildlife is scrambling to keep pace. It's becoming clear that humans have caused most of the past century's warming by releasing heat-trapping gases as we power our modern lives. Called greenhouse gases, their levels are higher now than in the last 650,000 years.

We call the result global warming, but it is causing a set of changes to the Earth's climate, or long-term weather patterns, that varies from place to place. As the Earth spins each day, the new heat swirls with it, picking up moisture over the oceans, rising here, settling there. It's changing the rhythms of climate that all living things have come to rely upon.

What will we do to slow this warming? How will we cope with the changes we've already set into motion? While we struggle to figure it all out, the face of the Earth as we know it—coasts, forests, farms and snow-capped mountains—hangs in the balance.

Greenhouse effect

The "greenhouse effect" is the warming that happens when certain gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat. These gases let in light but keep heat from escaping, like the glass walls of a greenhouse.

First, sunlight shines onto the Earth's surface, where it is absorbed and then radiates back into the atmosphere as heat. In the atmosphere, “greenhouse” gases trap some of this heat, and the rest escapes into space. The more greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere, the more heat gets trapped.

Scientists have known about the greenhouse effect since 1824, when Joseph Fourier calculated that the Earth would be much colder if it had no atmosphere. This greenhouse effect is what keeps the Earth's climate livable. Without it, the Earth's surface would be an average of about 60 degrees Fahrenheit cooler. In 1895, the Swedish chemist Svante Arrhenius discovered that humans could enhance the greenhouse effect by making carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. He kicked off 100 years of climate research that has given us a sophisticated understanding of global warming.

Levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs) have gone up and down over the Earth's history, but they have been fairly constant for the past few thousand years. Global average temperatures have stayed fairly constant over that time as well, until recently. Through the burning of fossil fuels and other GHG emissions, humans are enhancing the greenhouse effect and warming Earth.

Scientists often use the term "climate change" instead of global warming. This is because as the Earth's average temperature climbs, winds and ocean currents move heat around the globe in ways that can cool some areas, warm others, and change the amount of rain and snow falling. As a result, the climate changes differently in different areas.

Aren’t temperature changes natural?

The average global temperature and concentrations of carbon dioxide (one of the major greenhouse gases) have fluctuated on a cycle of hundreds of thousands of years as the Earth's position relative to the sun has varied. As a result, ice ages have come and gone.

However, for thousands of years now, emissions of GHGs to the atmosphere have been balanced out by GHGs that are naturally absorbed.  As a result, GHG concentrations and temperature have been fairly stable. This stability has allowed human civilization to develop within a consistent climate.

Occasionally, other factors briefly influence global temperatures.  Volcanic eruptions, for example, emit particles that temporarily cool the Earth's surface.  But these have no lasting effect beyond a few years. Other cycles, such as El Niño, also work on fairly short and predictable cycles.

Now, humans have increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by more than a third since the industrial revolution. Changes this large have historically taken thousands of years, but are now happening over the course of decades.

Why is this a concern?

The rapid rise in greenhouse gases is a problem because it is changing the climate faster than some living things may be able to adapt. Also, a new and more unpredictable climate poses unique challenges to all life.

Historically, Earth's climate has regularly shifted back and forth between temperatures like those we see today and temperatures cold enough that large sheets of ice covered much of North America and Europe. The difference between average global temperatures today and during those ice ages is only about 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit), and these swings happen slowly, over hundreds of thousands of years.

Now, with concentrations of greenhouse gases rising, Earth's remaining ice sheets (such as Greenland and Antarctica) are starting to melt too. The extra water could potentially raise sea levels significantly.

As the mercury rises, the climate can change in unexpected ways. In addition to sea levels rising, weather can become more extreme. This means more intense major storms, more rain followed by longer and drier droughts (a challenge for growing crops), changes in the ranges in which plants and animals can live, and loss of water supplies that have historically come from glaciers.

Scientists are already seeing some of these changes occurring more quickly than they had expected. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, eleven of the twelve hottest years since thermometer readings became available occurred between 1995 and 2006.

the origin of Mother's Day

the origin of Father's Day

Father's Day is always the third Sunday in June in the United States, Canada and most countries in Asia. Father's Day honors the role of dads and men who serve as father figures in the lives of others. On that day, fathers are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special. When children can't visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card.

Father's Day originated in 1909 in the US when a woman named Sonora Dodd came up with the idea. Through her efforts, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in June 1910. 1972 President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday in June.

unit 4 Is work just another four-letter work? page 52
1 Why are the reasons for the growing popularity of SOHO?

Because in some fields, people need to work a long time . They can hardly adapt to nornal office hours. So SOHO is becoming more and more popular  nowadays.

2 Would you like to work under the direction of a strict but efficient manager or a considerate but inefficiently manager? Why?

In fact , I would prefer to choose the former. The following are my reasons:
to begin with, I  can be more qualified when I work with a strict but efficient manager. Secondly, I can learn a lot  of useful characters from him. Such as efficiency and management Both of them are very useful for my career.

3Would you like to work in a company that is nor performing well but where everyone is friendly , or in a profitable company with complicated interpersonal relationships? Why?

I like to work in acompany that is profitable with complicted interpersonal relationships. Frankly speaking, I am not afraid that interpersonal relationships .Because I have gone through so much that I have confidence that
I can deal with them very well. And I am not influenced by them. All I am concerned is to earn more money . So that I can attain my aims, such as buying things to my parents and grandma.

4 If you were  a boss and wanted to appoint a manager for a newly-launched city, what qualification would you look for in this manager?
I would consider whether he has excellent qulifications, such as communication skills , diligence, teamwork, loyalty, intelligence, and coutesy.

unit2 Beauty can be bought page 24

1Do you think beauty affects self-esteem or vice versa?
Frankly speaking ,I do not think so.  I  think self-esteem has nothing  to do with beauty.
It comes from people's behaivior. And whether he worth our repect.

2  Do you agree beauty is in the eye  of the beholder?

Yes,  I  agree. We can  find  our lover is the most beautiful , because we love him . We even take  his shortages  as a natural  part.

3What are some of  the negative aspects  of being beautiful?
Firstly, it will be dangerous for girls going out at night.
Secondly, it wll cost people a  lot of time  in their appearance. And they may forget  some important things they should.
Finally, they  may look down upon  those who are ugly.

4What personality trait is the most important for one's inner beauty?
I think a kind heart is  more  beautiful than a beautful  appearance.Because  we feel the warm from  a  kind  person.
He  can  make  us  moved by his real kindness.

Discovery Could Ease Blood Shortages in Hospitals
Discovery Could Ease Blood Shortages in Hospitals

Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortages of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.

There are 4 main blood types. Most people are born with one of these four type A, type B, type AB or type O.

Type O is known as the universal blood type. It can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have a blood transfusion. Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of high demand. Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient's blood type.

Giving A, B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person's defense system. Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly. For example, people may die if they receive transplanted organs from someone with the wrong blood type.

Seed Collection Effort Aims to Safeguard 21 Food Crops

Seed Collection Effort Aims to Safeguard 21 Food Crops
A new project will try to protect twenty-one of the world's most important food crops by securing their seeds. Organizers
say the project will "rescue" seed collections in developing countries where many gene banks are in poor condition.

This is a joint project of two organizations, the Global Crop Diversity Trust and the United Nations Foundation. Cary Fowler, the director of the trust based in Rome, says it will be the largest such effort ever made.

The aim is to collect seeds or reproductive material from 165000 varieties of the crops. Organizers say the effort will secure more than 95% of the endangered crop diversity represented in gene banks in developing countries.

They say the fight against hunger cannot be won without securing crops that are in danger of being lost. Many of the crops are known as "orphan crops." Orphan crops do not get much attention from modern plant breeders but are especially important in poor countries. These include cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, taro and coconut.

Weddings

Amricans get married in different ways. But the meaning of all these wedding is the same. The bride and groom promise to spend the rest of their lives together.

Big wedding have created a huge business in the United States. A big wedding requires special clothing, photographs and music. Experts say the average American wedding costs about twenty-thousand dollars or more. Some estimates say Americans spend as much as seventy-thousand million dollars a year for everything connected with weddings.

Traditionally, the bride's parents plan and pay for their own weddings.Sometimes the groom's parents shaare this responsibilities. Today many Amricans are older when they get married . So they often organize and pay for their own weddings.

Couples planning their weddings can get advice in many different ways. They can ask their married friends. They can study magaazines pubished especially for people getting married.

Couples also can use the Internet computer system to prepare for wedding. The bride and groom can use the Internet to communicate with family members and friends who will take part in the celebration. They can look at pictures of wedding
clothes. They can choose flowers. They can choose flowers. They can decide where to hold the wedding party, and what foods  and drinks will be served. They can study where to take their trip after the wedding. This trip is called the "honeymoon." They can buy airplane tickets and decide on a hotel.

Wedding guests traditionally  give  gifts to the bride and groom. Computer technology also is making it easier for guests to find the perfect gift. Sometimes guests can do this without leaving home.

以为有了翅膀,就会变成一只鸟;

       <<地下铁>>

::click to download::
