This is AP News Minute.
I. The
Academy Award winner Sydney Pollack has died. Pollack’s agent says the
Out of Africa director was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. He
passed away in his California home on Monday. He was 73
II.
Midwest residents are trying to recover from a series of deadly
tornados. One twister killed a two-year-old in Minnesota. Another left
nearly half of this small Iowa town in ruins, destroying hundreds of
homes and the town’s only grocery store and gas station.
III.
President Bush pays tribute to the nation’s fallen soldiers on his last
memorial day in office. Bush told the crowded Arlington National
Cemetery that the best way to honor those who have died is to follow
their lead in preserving peace and freedom.
IV. One week after
being diagnosed with cancer as brain tumor, Senator Ted Kennedy seems
to be in pretty good sprits. Massachusetts’s Democrat competed in the
annual sailboat race near his Cape Cod home. He didn’t take home gold
but family members say he’ll be back next year to claim the top prize.
