It was a brighter picture in China, where the Shanghai Composite index(上证综合指数) jumped 3.6 per cent to 2,905.01, completing its first two-day gain(首次连续两个交易日上涨) in a month.
Baoshan Iron & Steel, China's largest steelmaker, recovered its poise somewhat(股份有所回升) after sliding more than 7 per cent on Tuesday on news that its parent Baosteel had agreed to a near- doubling in the price of iron ore it bought from Australian miner Rio Tinto.
Goldman Sachs said Bao-steel could tolerate a doubling in the contract price and still be profitable this year. The shares rose 5.9 per cent to Rmb9.59. Maanshan Iron & Steel jumped 7.5 per cent to Rmb5.71.
Encouraged by China's extended gains(受中国内地股市持续上涨提振), Hong Kong shares snapped its four-day losing streak(中止了连续四个交易日的跌势). The Hang Seng Index finished its half-day session up 0.8 per cent at 22,635.16(上涨0.8%,收于22635.16点).
China-related stocks led gains(中国内地概念股领涨), with China's fixed-line phone operators China Netcom (中国网通)advancing 3.1 per cent to HK$21.55 and China Telecom(中国电信) gaining 2.1 per cent to HK$4.44.
China Unicom, the smaller of the mainland's two cellular phone networks, added 2.5 per cent to HK$14.45 and bigger rival China Mobile rose 0.7 per cent to HK$107.50.
CNOOC(中海油), China's biggest offshore oil producer, climbed its strongest in more than three weeks涨幅为逾3周以来最高水平 after(转译为原因,恩,要记的~~)(原因是该公司一新油田投产及原油价格上涨) starting output at a new field and a rise in crude prices. The stock gained 3.4 per cent to HK$13.44该股上涨3.4%至13.44港元.
